Fight Preview
Josh Taylor will face the biggest fight of his career in June, as he takes on Teofimo Lopez in the challenger’s home city of New York. Many would argue that the Scot is extremely fortunate to still be the reigning champion, as he landed a hugely controversial split decision win over Jack Catterall last year.
The decision was criticized by many within the industry, with the challenger labeling it a ‘robbery’. Taylor has continued to state that he believed that he won the fight fairly, and it took his professional record to 19-0. The Scot has been the defending light-welterweight champion since claiming the WBA title in October 2019. He later added the WBC and WBO titles with a career-defining victory against Jose Ramirez in Las Vegas in May 2021.

Teofimo Lopez is still on a recovery mission, as he shockingly dropped the WBA, IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles in November 2021 following defeat against George Kambosos Jr. His decision to swerve a rematch was surprising, but he has quickly set his sights on becoming a two-weight world champion.
He has won both of his fights in the light-welterweight division, with the most recent of those being scored by split decision against Sandor Martin at Madison Square Garden in December 2022.
Prediction
This could be a thrilling fight in prospect, and there will be a desperate need for Taylor to produce a strong display following the controversial outcome against Catterall. We could see the champion defending, but it may once again come via split decision.
