Event Preview

A thrilling first race of the Formula 1 season was staged in Australia last Sunday, and fans will be hoping that there is more drama to follow at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday.

The drivers will complete a total of 56 laps to make up the 189.559-mile race distance at the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend, with Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes holding the overall records in terms of most race wins.

However, all the momentum this weekend will be with McLaren, who looked on course for a one-two finish Down Under last weekend. Lando Norris kept his cool in wet conditions to finish just under a second ahead of Max Verstappen, but Oscar Piastri tumbled down the order after spinning off in the closing stages.

Mercedes were the biggest winners on the opening day, with George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli taking third and fourth, respectively. Despite lacking the pace to compete with the McLaren and Red Bull further down the road, a strong strategy ensured that they were in the best place to pick up the pieces.

It was less successful for Ferrari, as a questionable strategic decision left Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc out in wet conditions on slicks. The lost time wasn’t able to be recovered, leaving both drivers finishing outside of the top seven positions.

Williams will also take major positives from their first outing of the season, despite Carlos Sainz crashing out on the first lap. Alex Albon produced an excellent drive to finish fifth in the classifications, while there were also points for Nico Hulkenberg for Kick Sauber.

Chinese Grand Prix Picks

Drier conditions are expected for this weekend, but the end result could be very similar. The McLaren looks much quicker than the chasing pack at this stage, meaning that Lando Norris is very difficult to bet against in Singapore on Sunday.
