Race Preview

The Belmont Derby is one of the standout races on the turf in the United States, with horses aged three competing over 1 ¼ miles at Belmont Park. This race was first staged in 1929 as the Jamaica Handicap, before it officially became a Grade 1 event in 2009. The speed record was set by Henley’s Joy in 2019, while Overdrawn won the race on three occasions before it was readjusted for horses aged three.

The Foxes is easily the most exciting horse in this field for trainer Andrew Balding. Oisin Murphy takes the ride on the three-year-old, who was last seen at the start of June, finishing a strong fifth in the G1 Epsom Derby. That form looks rock solid following Auguste Rodin’s recent win in the G1 Irish Derby and King of Steel landing a big prize at Royal Ascot. The Foxes was a winner at York in the middle of May in impressive style, beating White Birch by a neck. He looks tailor-made for an American track.

Silver Knott is another European raider this weekend, representing the Charlie Appleby yard. We saw this three-year-old in action at Belmont at the start of June, but he could only finish third behind Kalik in the G2 Pennine Ridge. He is yet to reach the heights of last season, which ended with a second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Kalik holds a form advantage over Silver Knott coming into this weekend, and the Chad Brown runner holds very serious claims after winning three from three this season. But, he may find life more testing in this bigger field on Saturday. Webslinger could be the value play in the field after progressing well throughout this season. His victory in the G2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs was extremely impressive.

Belmont Derby Prediction

I really like The Foxes this weekend, and I think he could easily outclass this field if repeating the effort he showed in the Epsom Derby. Webslinger is a horse that I expect to be his closest rival, while Mondego could be a contender at the prices after taking a considerable step forward in recent months with back-to-back wins at Belmont Park.
