Race Preview
An interesting edition of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is set for Friday. The field of horses aged two will compete over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on the dirt, with recent winners including Fierceness and Forte. The last winner to follow up a victory in the Juvenile with Kentucky Derby success was Nyquist in 2016.
Godolphin-owned East Avenue is a deserving favorite for the Brendan Walsh team this week.
The two-year-old has won two from two on track, and was at a very dominant level on his previous start when finishing over five lengths clear of Ferocious in the G1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. That form sets a high standard, and he is currently clear on official ratings.

However, he is by no means the only runner coming into this weekend with a perfect record on track. Chancer McPatrick is well within the conversation for trainer Chad Brown. The two-year-old beat Ferocious over seven furlongs in the G1 Hopeful, before progressing over a mile to finish nearly three lengths clear of Tip Top Thomas in the G1 Champagne.
Jonathan’s Way also has a perfect record on track, most recently winning over a mile at Churchill Downs to land the G3 Iroquois. This weekend’s Grade One represents a step up in class, but he appears to hold very interesting claims if improving once again.
Japan are well represented in the Juvenile this weekend. Ecoro Azel has some interesting form behind American Bikini over seven furlongs. But, Shin Believe could be the most interesting runner at the prices after winning over the distance at the start of August.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Picks
Bob Baffert last won this race with Corniche in 2021, but he has two interesting contenders this weekend. Gaming could be the most appealing of his runners after already winning at Del Mar.
The two-year-old won the G1 Del Mar Futurity over seven furlongs in September and further progression is likely from this son of former Juvenile winner, Game Winner.
