Race Preview
The graded action at the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday gets underway with the Dirt Mile. This race offers a purse of $1 million, and one of the heart-warming winners from the 2022 Breeders’ Cup will be heavily expected to defend his title.
William Mott-trained Cody’s Wish was excellent in the Dirt Mile last year, and he has now won seven starts from nine appearances in stakes company. His only blip this year came in the G1 Whitney, as he wasn’t able to step up in trip when finishing ten lengths behind White Abarrio. However, he returned to his dominant best on his previous start to land the G2 Vosburgh Stakes over seven furlongs.

National Treasure will get weight from the main market leader, but a return to his best will be needed from the Bob Baffert runner. The three-year-old is winless in three starts since his Preakness Stakes win, and he returns to a mile for the first time since finishing third at Santa Anita in the G3 Sham Stakes.
Charge It could potentially offer the value in the betting for trainer Todd Pletcher. He was last seen finishing fourth, but he was largely competitive over a mile before that effort. But, he does have form to find on Cody’s Wish after finishing over five lengths behind his rival in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap in June.
Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Prediction
Cody’s Wish appears to be one of the strongest fancies of the day for many, and we expect him to land a second straight win in this race. Charge It could chase home the market leader, while Skippylongstocking could be a fascinating contender to include in exotics after finishing in the top three on seven occasions from 12 starts in stakes company.
