Race Preview

The Distaff is always one of my favorite races at the Breeders’ Cup, as it typically throws up a frantic finish. The records of favorites in this race could be a challenging one to overlook, as only one market leader has landed victory in the previous eight editions. High draws also perform well, with four of the previous five winners drawn nine or higher.

That being said, Idiomatic sets the standard for trainer Brad Cox after winning five from six starts this season. The four-year-old blew apart a talented field over the Distaff distance last month in the G1 Spinster, beating Le Da Vida by over four lengths. Her only defeat this season was suffered on her only start over a mile or less.

Bob Baffert’s Adare Manor could be the runner to throw down the challenge this weekend, as she was very impressive over just under the Distaff distance when landing the G2 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita by over five lengths. She has form over 1 1/8 miles, landing the G2 Santa Margarita Stakes at the California track by over four lengths in June.

Search Results and Clairiere are two returning runners to the Distaff party, but both will have to raise their performance levels based on the form that they have shown this season. An intriguing selection of three-year-olds also line up, including Wet Paint for Brad Cox, who was a winner over 1 1/8 at Saratoga in the G1 American Oaks.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Prediction

Idiomatic could be very special, but the record of favorites in the Distaff does offer enough encouragement to take her on. It’s likely that we haven’t yet seen the best of this year’s crop of three-year-olds, meaning Wet Paint could be a standout exotics play. However, Randomized could be a stunning selection based on her four length win over Wet Paint in the G1 Alabama Stakes in August.
