Race Preview
The fifth race on the card on Breeders’ Cup Saturday will be the Filly & Mare Sprint. This race is run over seven furlongs, with a purse of $1 million being available. Goodnight Olive appears to be the runner that the filly needs to beat, as the five-year-old bids to become only the second two-time winner of the race.
The Chad Brown runner is clear on ratings, and returned to the track following a 70-day break when finishing second to Echo Zulu over seven furlongs in the G1 Ballerina Handicap. But, she boasts excellent form on paper, including a one-length victory in this race 12 months ago.

Society is the closest matched contender on paper to the favorite. The Steven Asmussen runner returned after a break in late August to land a listed stakes success by over five lengths at Charles Town. She has looked largely progressive over seven furlongs, and could have a key part to play on Saturday.
Matareya appears to have too much form to find on a number of rivals to consider, as she was third behind Goodnight Olive at Saratoga in August, and also finished 12 lengths behind Society at Elis Park in late June. Yuugiri could have a lively outside chance based on speed ratings from her last two wins, but she was 17 lengths behind Goodnight Olive in this race 12 months ago.
Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Prediction
Irad Ortiz has won three from seven editions of this race, and low draws have won three of the last four. Therefore, Goodnight Olive looks to be the standout contender. Meikei Yell could be an interesting outsider to consider after returning from a long break to finish fifth in a very quick G1 Sprinters Stakes in Japan on her previous start.
