Race Preview

The Breeders’ Cup Mile will be the sixth race on the card at Santa Anita on Saturday, with turf horses from across the globe competing over a mile. A purse of $2 million is available for the Grade 1. British and Irish trainers have dominated the previous three editions, while four favorites have won the Mile in the last six years.

Mawj looks to be a deserving favorite for Saeed bin Suroor and Oisin Murphy this weekend, as the three-year-old has won on six from her nine career starts. She was a very impressive winner over a mile at Newmarket in May, landing the G1 1,000 Guineas by half a length from Tahiyra. She returned to action with an impressive display in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Keeneland last month.

Japanese hopes will hang on Songline in the Mile. The five-year-old returned after a lengthy layoff to finish second by a nose in the G2 Mainichi Okan in Toyko last month, but she was a multiple-time stakes winner over a mile in Japan. Charlie Appleby’s record in this race deserves respect, and that could make Master of the Seas a leading chance despite his recent defeat to Up To The Mark at Keeneland.

Casa Creed is the pick of the American challengers this weekend after winning on each of his previous two starts over a mile for William Mott. His pace could be the tempting betting angle at the current prices, as he could feasibly speed away from the field in the final stages. Kelina also brings in strong French form this week, and the conditions could really suit the three-year-old.

Breeders’ Cup Mile Prediction

Despite Appleby’s record in the Mile, we will be fading Master of the Seas on Saturday. Mawj appears to be the most likely winner, but Casa Creed and Kelina could both be storming home in the final stages. More Than Looks could be an interesting outsider worth considering for Cherie DeVaux if improving after his recent stakes win over a mile at Churchill Downs.
