Race Preview
One of the most open editions of the race in history is upon us, as this yearâs crop of three-year-olds look to join recent victors in the Epsom Derby, which include Adayar, Desert Crown, and Serpentine. Godolphin is well represented in the betting this year, as the impressive Military Order looks a deserving favorite.
This three-year-old is a brother to 2021 Derby winner Adayar, and has progressed effortlessly throughout this season. Despite holding an official rating of 81, he has excelled over the extended distance on two starts this season. After an eye-catching bow at Newbury, he landed the Linfield Derby Trial by over a length from Waipiro. He is my idea of the Derby winner this year for trainer Charlie Appleby.

Aidan OâBrien has trained a record eight winners of the Derby, and will be represented by Deep Impact-sired Auguste Rodin. This three-year-old had the pressure of being a Triple Crown contender before the season, but things fell apart quickly for him in the G1 2,000 Guineas in early May. He eventually finished back in 12th, and a response will be needed over this more suitable trip.
Frankie Dettori kicked off his retirement season in style with 2,000 Guineas glory, and he has a very realistic contender for the Derby in the form of Arrest. This runner for John & Thady Gosden was a standout performer at the recent Chester meeting, landing the G3 Chester Vase by a comfortable six lengths from Adelaide River.
Epsom Derby Outsiders
The Foxes for Andrew Balding is a runner I really like for King Power racing. He looked stylish when holding off White Birch in the G2 Dante, but the runner-up could actually be better suited to the extra distance at Epsom. White Birch was a winner in Ireland earlier in the campaign over a mile and two furlongs, and he could run a huge race at a price.
San Antonio is the unfancied OâBrien runner at Epsom, but he holds one of the highest official ratings in the race. It remains to be seen whether a start in the Derby is on the cards, but he was extremely eye-catching when landing the Dee Stakes by nearly two lengths at Chester.
Epsom Derby 2023 Picks
I have been very sweet on Military Orderâs chances for this race for months, and I think he remains the one to beat. Arrest is fascinating for Dettori, while Passenger could be an eye-catching supplementary. At a price, White Birch could be primed to run a big race, as his Ballysax Stakes form-line is strong.
