Match Preview
The world-famous Derby will be staged at Epsom this weekend, as a field of horses aged three compete over a mile and four. This race was first held in 1780, and it is one of the most significant editions of the contest this year, as it is the first that doesn’t boast any runners sired by Galileo.
Aidan O’Brien has won this race on a record nine occasions, and he boasts leading chances at the head of the betting. City of Troy was a superstar at two, but he underperformed on his return to action when finishing at the back in the G1 1,000 Guineas. However, that bodes well, with the last three runners to have competed at Newmarket before lining up at Epsom all winning. That includes last year’s victor, Auguste Rodin.

O’Brien also saddles the unbeaten Los Angeles. He has been workman-like throughout his career to this point, but it was hard not to have been impressed by his battling qualities shown when landing the Leopardstown Trial in May. The Dante has been a notable stepping stone to the Derby, meaning that Ancient Wisdom for the Godolphin team is hard to dismiss, especially if the forecasted rain arrives.
Ambiente Friendly is another runner of note, but the decision of owners to put Robert Havlin aboard could backfire. Bellum Justum will be our second choice in the Derby this weekend for the Andrew Balding yard. The three-year-old is one of few with Epsom experience, having landed the trial over a mile and two last month by just under a length.
Epsom Derby Prediction
City of Troy is incredibly hard to support following his performance in the 1,000 Guineas. Therefore, narrow preference is given to his stablemate, Los Angeles. At a price, Macduff could out-run his odds after battling to an excellent second over a mile and two behind the unfortunate but talented Arabian Crown at Sandown.
