Race Preview

The Champion Fillies & Mares Stakes has been contested since 1946, and was previously known as the Pride Stakes and Princess Royal Stakes. It has been a Group One contest since being upgraded in 2013. Last year’s winner was Poptronic for Karl Burke, beating this year’s Arc winner Bluestocking in the process.

Three-year-old runners have won six of the last seven renewals, with the only exception coming in 2023. Therefore, it is little surprise to see the top of the betting dominated by this year’s Classic generation.

Kalpana looks perfectly poised for a big run this weekend for Andrew Balding after dominating on the all-weather at Kempton last month. However, her turf figures will need to improve in this company to land a first Group One.

Content is one of the Aidan O’Brien runners this weekend. She was last seen finishing tenth in the G1 Prix de l’Opera, but was progressive before that defeat over a mile and four, most recently landing the G1 Yorkshire Oaks to reverse the form with You Got To Me from the G1 Irish Oaks.

Tiffany has been lightly race for the Sir Mark Prescott team this season, but has produced some eye-catching runs. Further improvement will be needed following a win in a German Group Two in late August.

Queen of the Pride could feasibly bounce back after a no-show in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks. She had won back-to-back races over a mile and four before that effort, which included a dominant three-length success over Tiffany in the G2 Lancashire Oaks.

British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes Picks

Plenty have leading chances in the race this weekend. However, the slight preference goes for the tried and tested Time Lock for Arc-winning jockey Rossa Ryan.

She bounced back to form on testing ground at Newmarket last time to land the G3 Dubai Stakes, and was a solid performer when seventh in the race last year.
