Race Preview
The season-defining G1 Champion Stakes is staged at Ascot on Saturday, with the field competing over a mile and one furlong. It has been run annually since 1877, with iconic winners such as Frankel, Cracksman, and Sealiway winning the race in recent history.
Calandagan heads the betting in a stunning showdown with Economics. The French raider has won three from five this season, and plenty of positives would have been taken from his run when second behind City of Troy in the G1 Juddmonte International. Was a stunning winner of the G2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Economics has done nothing wrong for William Haggas this season, and maintained his perfect record as a three-year-old when besting Auguste Rodin in a thrilling finish of the G1 Irish Champion Stakes. Has been lightly campaigned by connections with this race in mind.

Los Angeles could be the forgotten contender in this race for the combination of Aidan OโBrien and Ryan Moore. The three-year-old won the G1 Irish Derby in June, before taking the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes.
Was fourth behind Economics in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes before a stunning effort to take third in the G1 Arc. A return so quickly after a grueling race at Longchamp raises considerable questions.
Iresine is another runner for the French this weekend after winning over a mile and four at Longchamp last month. Kingโs Gambit has done nothing wrong this season and could be primed to battle for a place in the top three after taking a close third behind Los Angeles in the G2 Great Voltigeur.
Champion Stakes Stakes Picks
An excellent renewal of the Champion Stakes is set for this weekend. However, we are firmly in the camp of Calandagan to gain a memorable win for the French at Ascot. He has improved with every performance, and boasts excellent previous form at Ascot.
