Race Preview

The Hollywood Derby is one of the final big Grade 1s on the U.S. racing calendar this year, with Del Mar hosting the contest on Saturday. This race is open to horses aged three, with the field competing over a distance of 1 1/8 miles. There have been some excellent recent winners of this race, including Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome in 2014, and Domestic Spending in 2020.

Program Trading is a strong favorite in the betting for trainer Chad Brown this weekend. The three-year-old has won three from four career starts, and was a Grade 1 winner earlier in the season when landing the Saratoga Derby. He remains of huge interest this weekend despite only finishing second in the G3 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs in September.

Webslinger has always looked a high-quality runner on the turf, and was a big winner earlier in the season when landing the American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs. However, he has form to make up on a number of rivals this weekend after finishing second in the G1 Saratoga Derby and third in the G2 Twilight Derby. But, he remains of huge interest for exotics.

Seal Team has looked largely progressive throughout this season for Richard Mandella, and he was excellent when winning the G2 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita in November. On that day, he got the better of Charlie Appleby-trained Silver Knott. The British raider remains of interest, but he is becoming expensive to follow after failing to win in his previous four starts on American soil.

Hollywood Derby Prediction

Webslinger, Seal Team, and Program Trading are all horses to include in exotics this weekend. However, we like the chances of Redistricting to win the race for Chad Brown. The three-year-old is highly regarded by connections and was far from disgraced when seventh in the G1 Belmont Derby. He bounced back excellently to win in allowance company on his previous start at Belmont at the Big A, and improvement is likely over this extended distance.
