Race Preview
There are few more important early stops on the Road to the Kentucky Derby than the Los Alamitos Futurity. This race has seen six starters later go on to land Derby success at Churchill Downs, including most recently Giacomo in 2005. Meanwhile, it has been a solid race to pinpoint other Triple Crown winners, evident from Oxbow’s success in the Preakness Stakes in 2015.
Bob Baffert has dominated the recent renewals of the race, and he goes in search of a record-extending 14th victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity on Saturday. Baffert has a strong hand to play, with three runners currently located in the top four in the betting. Coach Prime could be among his leading chances, with Flavien Prat taking the ride this weekend.

The two-year-old broke his maiden on the second attempt at Del Mar last month, as he scored a career-high speed rating of 96. That was a much-improved effort after finishing only third on debut at Santa Anita in October. Wine Me Up is another runner for the dominant trainer, with Juan Hernandez taking the ride on the two-year-old this weekend.
He was a distant eighth in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on his previous start, but he is slightly more battle-hardened than many of his rivals, and his second in the G1 American Pharoah could yet be the key form line heading into the weekend. Stronghold also can’t be dismissed this weekend after appearing incredibly consistent across his three starts on track to date. However, his only win to date was recorded at Churchill Downs at the start of October.
Los Alamitos Futurity Prediction
There’s no shortage of leading contenders in the race this weekend, but a chance is taken on Tim Yakteen’s Moonlit Sonata. The two-year-old was visually impressive on debut at Del Mar last month, scoring a speed figure of 90 in a maiden special weight. More improvement could be set to come over an extended distance.
