Race Preview
A key prep race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is staged at Santa Anita this weekend, with the Robert B. Lewis Stakes attracting a star-studded field of runners. This race is a major prep for the Santa Anita Derby, which has been hugely successful in pinpointing likely Derby contenders at Churchill Downs throughout history.
Bob Baffert has been the standout trainer in this race, landing eleven victories overall and wins in each of the last five editions. There’s little doubt that Nysos sets the standard this weekend, as the three-year-old has looked extremely impressive across his two career he starts. He stepped up to seven furlongs on his previous outing, landing the G3 Bob Hope with a speed rating of 105 at Del Mar. That run makes him the clear win contender on Saturday.

However, Baffert is ineligible to pick up qualifying points this weekend due to his ban at Churchill Downs. Therefore, Nysos and neither Coach Prime nor Wine Me Up will be moving up the leaderboard on Saturday. Stronghold could be an interesting contender for trainer Phillip D’Amato, having finished ahead of many of these rivals when claiming second in the ultra-competitive G2 Los Alamitos Futurity on his previous start.
Scatify could be an intriguing newcomer in stakes company for trainer John Sadler, as he was sired by Triple Crown hero Justify. The three-year-old was very impressive on his racecourse debut at Laurel Park in December, scoring a speed rating of 93 over six furlongs. Further improvement is extremely likely over this extended trip.
Robert B. Lewis Stakes Prediction
While Nysos won’t be heading to the Derby this year, he remains the standout contender in this field. It’s likely that the Baffert runner will be aimed at the Preakness Stakes, and he boasts a very exciting profile. Scatify could be a decent selection to finish in the top three, while the classy Stronghold is also an exacta selection.
