Preview
Arizona entered the break on a bit of a losing skid, having gone 2-5 in the final week of the 1st half. Their temporary lack of winning opened the door just enough for the Dodgers to take over a share of 1st place in the NL West. The Diamondbacks led the division for much of the past 2 months, but are in danger of sliding out of 1st place now. They’ll aim to start the 2nd half of the season hot and keep the pressure up.
The Blue Jays climbed into 3rd place in a competitive AL East right before the break, thanks to a 5-1 week to end the 1st half. They currently sit in a Wild Card spot, but have a long way to go to feel secure in that position, with many teams just a few games back. Toronto’s schedule in the 2nd half is very difficult. Their first four series come against tough west coast teams; the Diamondbacks, Padres, Mariners, and Dodgers.
Prediction
Both of these teams had solid 1st halves to the season, but are stuck in tough divisions with a lot of work to do. This series will be crucial, with it having the potential to set the early pace of the 2nd half of the season. The Diamondbacks will have the inconsistent Ryne Nelson (5.19 ERA, 1.43 WHIP) on the mound, needing a strong enough outing to take down the Blue Jays on the road. I’ll take Toronto to win this one.
