  • The Diamondbacks lost to the Braves on Sunday, 8-5.
  • Washington slid further with an 11-3 loss to the Phillies.
  • The Nationals are 95-72 in their all-time history against Arizona.

The Diamondbacks (35-25) and the Nationals (25-34) face off in an NL Bout. Washington has had another disappointing year thus far, while Arizona has finally begun to show life, and is playing better this season.

Preview

Arizona had their 6-game winning streak snapped by the Braves over the weekend. After winning the first game of the series, they lost on Saturday and Sunday. The Diamondbacks are currently tied in 1st place in the NL West with the Dodgers, exceeding the expectations of many. After multiple futile seasons since their last playoff appearance in 2017, Arizona is finally fielding a team capable of making it to October ball.

The Nationals continued to struggle last week, going 2-4, and cementing themselves in last place in the NL East division. Like Arizona, Washington is seeking their first success in a few years, though the Nats did get a World Series title out of their recent success. The rebuild since then has been long and painstaking. They need a stretch of stronger play if they want to avoid being sellers at the deadline once again in 2023.

Prediction

Washington’s main advantage in this series is their homefield advantage. Unfortunately, they are outmatched by an Arizona team that is nearly 10 games ahead of them. In this first game, the Diamondbacks will also have the capable Tommy Henry (3.73 ERA) on the mound against a shaky Jake Irvin (5.67 ERA). I have a pretty good feeling about Arizona’s chances of winning both this game and series.
