Their scorching hot streak has further cemented the idea that the Diamondbacks are legitimately good this season, and not just a fluke. Their 17-11 record on the road is the 2nd best in the National League, and they rank 3rd in the NL in runs scored. Arizona has an opportunity to further extend their lead against the flailing Tigers.
The Tigers lost any semblance of the momentum they had gained, having now lost 6 games in a row, and 8 of their last 9. With 6 games against the division-leading Diamondbacks and Braves up next, Detroit needs to quickly rebound or risk sliding further in the division standings. The Tigers are only 3.5 games out of first place, due to no team being over .500 in the AL Central. They can stay alive if they turn it around.
Prediction
With Arizona being red-hot and the Tigers going cold, it makes sense to lean towards picking the Diamondbacks here. They’ll have to overcome the game being on the road, but their strong road record indicates they should be able to. They’ll field Merrill Kelly (2.80 ERA) on the mound against Michael Lorenzen (3.21 ERA) of the Tigers. I see Arizona winning this game without much issue. I’ll say 7-3.
