Los Angeles managed to avoid being swept by the Reds, picking up a solid 6-0 win. Unfortunately, they’ve now gone 5-8 over the last two weeks, allowing Arizona to take over the 1st place spot in the division. The Dodgers will be looking to capitalize on a series against the struggling Phillies here, hoping to quickly reclaim the NL West lead. Their pitching has been very inconsistent, a problem they are not used to in LA.
The Phillies followed up last week’s 5-game losing streak with a 5-game winning streak, after sweeping the Tigers on Thursday. They returned to just 2 games under .500, but still have a lot of work to do to get back into the playoff picture. The defending NL champions have had some inconsistency on offense this season. Philadelphia’s outfield has played well, but the infield has struggled. They’ll aim to heat up here.
Prediction
It’s always hard to pick a winner between two teams that are both fielding struggling starting pitchers. The Phillies will have an advantage with Ranger Suarez (5.47 ERA) whose troubles echo Michael Grove (8.14 ERA) of the Dodgers. I expect both starting pitchers to get pulled pretty early on, with the Dodgers bullpen edging out Philadelphia’s by a small margin. I’ll take Los Angeles to win this road game by a run or two.
