Baltimore has continued their incredible start to the season, having now gone 9-3 over their last 12 games, and improving to 31-16 overall. The Orioles spent much of the last few seasons rebuilding, and saw glimpses of the potential in their young team in the 2nd half of last year. They’ve matched those expectations so far in 2023, currently holding the MLB’s 2nd-best record. Baltimore baseball is finally back.
The Yankees seem to have broken out of their slump, beginning to look more like the team most fans are used to. After sweeping the Reds in Cincinnati, New York is now 14-5 in their last 19 games, improving from 15-15 to 29-20. They still sit 6 games behind the 1st-place Rays, so the Yankees still have a lot of work to do, starting with Baltimore. Defending MVP Aaron Judge ranks 1st in the MLB in OPS once again.
Prediction
Both the Orioles and Yankees are capable teams that are currently playing great baseball. This should be a very balanced and thoroughly entertaining series, with the main advantage coming from the starting pitching matchups. In this first game, Baltimore has the capable Kyle Brandish (2-1, 3.90 ERA), but will face an uphill battle against New York’s ace in Gerrit Cole (5-0, 2.01 ERA). I’ll take the Yankees to win this one.
