Game Preview
San Diego shut out the Braves in a 1-0 victory on Wednesday, avoiding the sweep. They slid into 3rd place in the NL West last week, after going 2-7 in the 9 games prior to their narrow 1-0 victory. The Padres will aim to build on the momentum of that win, facing an uphill battle against the division-leading Diamondbacks on the road. They’ve gotten some great games from SS Xander Bogaerts so far (.342 BA).
The Diamondbacks had their 3-game winning streak snapped by the Cardinals on Wednesday, giving up 14 runs in the loss. Madison Bumgarner continued to struggle, giving up 7 ER in just 3 IP. His ERA rose to 10.26 ERA, before he was relieved by Peter Solomon (12.27 ERA), who gave 7 ER of his own in 2.1 IP. Despite their collapse in that game, Arizona has started the season hot, and will aim to get back on track.
Prediction
It’s a bit surprising to see the Diamondbacks as the underdogs in this game. Sure, entering this season (and last season) the Padres were a much better team, but a lot changes every season. So far this year, Arizona has been playing the better baseball, and also has home-field advantage in this game. They’ll be starting Ryne Nelson (3.71 ERA), who has the advantage over Michael Wacha (6.06 ERA). I’ll take Arizona.
