Preview
Pittsburgh is now 2-11 in their last 13 games, dropping from 20-8 to 22-19 on the season. After surprising many with their excellent start, the Pirates drew 9 games against the historically strong AL East division, going 1-8 against them. Their schedule eases up a bit, but still won’t be easy, so Pittsburgh will need to heat back up to keep pace. They’ve scored just 22 runs over the last 13 games, averaging less than 2 rpg.
The Tigers have gone 8-4 over their last 12 games, pulling to within 3 games of the .500 mark. After a poor 10-17 start, Detroit has begun to play some competitive baseball. They sit just four games out of 1st place and 0.5 games out of 2nd place in a weak AL Central division, with a real chance to fight for the division lead. Detroit’s offense has been key in their rejuvenated play, but they’ve also been inconsistent.
Prediction
It’d be pretty difficult to bet on the Pirates with how they’ve been playing lately, even if they weren’t on the road against a team that is playing their best baseball of the year thus far. Pittsburgh’s 22 runs over the last 13 games are extremely concerning, though 10 of those 22 came in the last 4 games. Even if they begin to heat back up, I don’t like their chances of winning this game. I’ll take the Tigers to win this one.
