Preview

Tampa Bay continues to lead the MLB, despite slowing down after their red-hot start. After a historic 29-7 start to the year, they’ve gone a much more modest 25-20. Since June 9, they’ve cooled off even more, going 7-8 in the 15 games in that span. Most recently, they split a 4-game home series against the 22-56 Royals. They should still make the postseason easily, but it’d be beneficial to gain some momentum back.

The Diamondbacks continue to lead the NL West division, but the Giants and Dodgers are applying consistent pressure right behind them. After losing 2 out of 3 games against the Giants over the weekend, Arizona now holds just a 3-game cushion between 1st and 3rd place in the division. They’ll face some very tough competition in this series against the Rays, needing wins to enter the break as the NL West leaders.

Prediction

Both the Rays and the Diamondbacks are leading their divisions, and feeling the pressure to keep winning and stay in 1st place. This should be a competitive series, that is unlikely to result in a sweep for either team. For this first game, the Diamondbacks will build on their home field advantage with a strong starting pitcher in Zac Gallen (2.84 ERA). He should give Arizona the edge over Tampa’s Taj Bradley (3.86 ERA).
