Game Preview
Colorado took another loss on Wednesday, falling to the Cardinals 7-4. They’ve now gone 3-8 over their last 11 games, after starting out 2-0 with a couple of great road wins against the Padres. The Rockies encouraging start has already vanished, but it’s not too late to get back on track. They’ll face a Mariners team that has struggled just as much. Catcher Elias Diaz should play a big role. He’s 8 for his last 13 (.615).
The Mariners finally snapped their 20-year playoff drought last season, finishing 90-72, but fell 3-0 in the ALDS. They expected to enter this season at the same level or better, hoping to continue their exciting play from last year. So far, they’ve fallen far short of those expectations, due to regression from players that outperformed their career averages last season. They still have plenty of time to turn things around.
Prediction
Both the Rockies and Mariners have had rough starts to the season, making it difficult to feel confident in picking either one of them. In this matchup, the Mariners have a couple of notable advantages. They were the better team last season, with a primarily similar roster. They have the home field advantage in this game, and perhaps most importantly, they’ll be facing a struggling Austin Gomber (6.75 ERA) in this game.
