Preview
Indiana smothered Eastern Illinois, cruising to a 1-0 record. They didn’t have to play their starters long. F Mackenzie Holmes played just 18 minutes, going an efficient 9 for 10 from the field, and finishing with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks. She’ll likely be on the court for closer to 40 minutes against Stanford. The Hoosiers have the talent around Holmes to make a deep run, but need to improve their 3-pt shooting.
Stanford took care of business in their opener, more than doubling up Hawai’i in points. Their competition may not have been the toughest, but it was still an encouraging result in a game where star F Cameron Brink scored just 8 points for the Cardinal. Kiki Iriafen led the way with 23 points, after averaging just 6.7 ppg last season. If more players around Brink improve this year, Stanford will be way better than expected.
Prediction
This is a very interesting matchup. Both of these teams are ranked inside the top-15, but outside of the top-10, putting them in a “prove it” position to get into the title conversation. They’ll have a chance to quickly show off their ability in this game against a top opponent. Mackenzie Holmes vs Cameron Brink is a key matchup to watch. Ultimately, I believe Stanford is ranked too low, and will have the advantage here.
