Preview

Maryland took down Harvard in their opener, starting out 1-0. Their schedule gets much tougher right away, with road games against #6 South Carolina and #2 UConn up next. The Terps made the Elite 8 last year, but face a lot of roster turnover, including the departures of Diamond Miller and Abby Meyers, who were selected 2nd and 11th overall in the WNBA draft. Maryland will need their fresh faces to step up here.

South Carolina had an statement victory over Notre Dame in their opener. Despite dominating almost every team they played for the last half decade, the Gamecocks opened this season ranked #6 due to roster turnover. Head coach Dawn Staley didn’t expect much regression despite the new faces, and she appears to be right. The 29-point win over #10 Notre Dame solidified South Carolina as a top contender.

Prediction

Back in March, these two teams faced off in the Elite 8, with South Carolina emerging victorious. Both teams had an notable amount of roster turnover, but the Gamecocks will likely retain their advantage. They will be at home for this game instead of a neutral tournament location, and proved against Notre Dame that they are still immensely talented. This should be a bit closer, but I see South Carolina winning.
