Preview

Arkansas State continued to struggle last season, finishing just 3-9. The Red Wolves had become used to a solid level of success, after making a bowl game in 9 straight seasons from 2011 to 2019. They finished above .500 every single one of those seasons, posting a 75-41 (.647) record in that span. Since then, the Red Wolves have gone just 9-26 (.257). They’ll be aiming to get back on track with new recruits in 2023.

Oklahoma collapsed last year in Brent Venables’ first season. They finished under the .500 mark for the first time since 1998, nearly missing their first bowl game in just as long. The decision to not prioritize Caleb Williams may be still affecting them, leaving them in a tough spot. Even so, they brought in another top recruiting class, and were ranked in the preseason Top 25. They need to prove they deserve that spot.

Prediction

This is an interesting spread to bet on. While Oklahoma should have no trouble winning outright, it may be closer than people expect. Both of these teams have been historically successful, but have regressed lately. It’ll come down to which team bounces back better in Week 1. Ultimately, I think the Sooners will win with confidence, but I wouldn’t feel safe betting on a 6-win team to cover a 33-point spread in Week 1.
