Preview
Coastal Carolina had another solid season last year, finishing 9-4. Unfortunately, they lost badly in the Birmingham Bowl, and will aim to put that behind them this season. QB Grayson McCall returns as one of college football’s most consistent passers. The Chanticleers have gone 31-7 in McCall’s three seasons as a starter. They should rise to the top of the Sun Belt again in 2023, even with a new head coach taking over.
UCLA continues to improve in the Chip Kelly era, after a mediocre set of results before he took over in 2018. Even so, they’ve been unable to crack the very top of the Pac-12. Last season, the Bruins wound up in the Sun Bowl, finishing far from an NY6 bowl or the CFP. As they get set to join the even more difficult Big-10 next season, UCLA could benefit from a top-3 result. It’ll be tough to do with a new QB at the helm.
Prediction
Both of these teams are solid, and should be on the way to another bowl season. I’m a bit surprised the spread is this large, with Coastal Carolina being one of the top Group of 5 teams over the past 3 seasons. I think UCLA should be able to win at home, even with a bit of roster turnover, but the consistency that McCall provides the Chanticleers will make it tough for the Bruins to cover. I see UCLA winning by a TD.
