Preview

Navy finished 4-8 last season, posting their 3rd consecutive finish with 4 wins or fewer. Since their 11-2 season and top-20 finish in 2019, the Midshipmen have gone just 11-23 overall. Their current bowl game drought is the longest since they missed the postseason for six straight years from 1997-2002. To change things up, Navy is moving on from 15-year head coach Ken Niumatalolo, giving them a fresh look in 2023.

Notre Dame had a bit of a down season last year, failing to win 10 games for the first time since 2016. Despite missing a New Year’s Six Bowl last season, they still finished with a 9-4 record after defeating South Carolina in the Gator Bowl. The Fighting Irish brought in top-tier QB Sam Hartman from Wake Forest, giving them some rare consistency at the position. Hartman’s skill should propel them to 10 wins in 2023.

Prediction

Both of these teams should be on the rise this season, with some new assets brought in after they had underwhelming finishes in 2022. Notre Dame barely scrapped by against Navy last season in November, ultimately winning by just three points. With QB Sam Hartman now on the team, I expect Notre Dame’s offense to be more efficient, taking pressure off the defense. I’ll take the Fighting Irish to win and cover.
