Preview
Northwestern had a season they’d like to forget last year. After narrowly winning their home opener against Nebraska, the Wildcats went on to lose 11 consecutive games, finishing with one of the worst records in all of college football. Northwestern made the decision to move on from Pat Fitzgerald at head coach after 17 seasons, providing them with a fresh start for this year. They need to avoid last place again.
Rutgers remained as one of the Big-10’s bottom dwellers last year, going just 4-8. They haven’t finished above .500 since 2014, posting a 21-69 (.233) record over the past 8 seasons. The Scarlet Knights are hoping to turn things around in the final year before the Big-10 expands and the competition gets even tougher. A home win over Northwestern is a necessity for the Scarlet Knights to get off to a good start.
Prediction
This is a matchup between two of the Big-10’s least dangerous teams. Both have been abysmal over the past few seasons, but had some level of success in the past. For this matchup, I’d favor a Rutgers team at home that managed to win three more games than Northwestern last season. This will likely be a low-scoring affair with a lot of turnovers. The Wildcats defense will aid them, but I don’t think it will be enough.
