Preview
San Jose State had a mediocre season last year, finishing 7-5. They’ve begun to make some marked improvement under 7th-year head coach Brent Brennan. After going 8-29 with no bowl appearances in his first three seasons, the Spartans have gone 19-13 over the past three years. With the Mountain West likely to either expand or lose teams to a rebuilt Pac-12, the time is now for the Spartans to show their worth.
USC started last season out 11-1, with their eyes on a CFP appearance. Unfortunately, they wound up losing the last two games of the season, first to Utah 47-24 in the Pac-12 title game, and then to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. Despite their struggles down the stretch, the Trojans are expected to be a strong CFP contender again this season. With QB Caleb Williams at the helm, USC’s ceiling for this season is sky-high.
Prediction
It’s always hard to predict games with massive 25+ point spreads, especially in the first week when most players are still building chemistry or getting adjusted to some level of change. Typically, I’d lean towards taking the underdog in those scenarios. That being said, USC has the best player in college football at the most important position, and an entirely better roster than San Jose State has. They should win and cover.
