Preview

SE Missouri State opens this season ranked #11 in the FCS Coaches Poll, after finishing last season ranked #13. The Redhawks went 5-0 in conference play last season, and then won a coin flip tiebreaker to claim the Ohio Valley’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. They went on to lose in the first round to Montana, but took notable steps forward as a program. They will have a chance to reach 10 wins in the 2023-24 season.

Kansas State is the reigning Big-12 champion, after knocking off TCU in the Big-12 title game last season. They started out the year unranked, but exceeded expectations the entire season, eventually earning a spot in the Sugar Bowl to face Alabama. The Wildcats may have lost that game and finished at 10-4, but they re-established themselves as a top football school, an important factor with the growth of the Big-12.

Prediction

If an FCS over FBS upset happens in Week 1, it’s likely to come from a team like the Redhawks who are ranked in the FCS top-15. That being said, it will be a tall task to upset a capable Kansas State team on the road. In the end, I see the Wildcats coming away with a solid win in Week 1. On the other hand, I wouldn’t be completely surprised if SE Missouri State makes it a bit closer than expected and covers the spread.
