Preview
South Alabama is coming off one of their best seasons, having won 10 games for the first time in their program’s FBS history. Their previous best finish was a record of just 6-7 in 2016, proving just how impressive their 10-3 finish was. Unfortunately, they lost in the New Orleans Bowl, and are still seeking their first bowl win in team history. They’ll have a great shot at earning it this season with a similar roster.
Tulane had a tremendous season last year. They finished 12-2, marking the first time they reached 12 wins since an undefeated season in the C-USA back in 1998. The Green Wave’s previous best finish in the AAC was a record of just 7-6. This season, Tulane returns a lot of the same players in a conference that is now without its top talent. They deserve their preseason ranking, and could make a NY6 bowl again in 2024.
Prediction
This is a stellar matchup between two of the best Group of Five teams. If they’re both able to build on last season’s double-digit win totals, this game could wind up deciding which team makes a NY6 bowl. Tulane has a major advantage as the host. They should have a packed crowd after last year’s incredible season and Cotton Bowl win. Even so, South Alabama could keep it close. I’ll take Tulane to win it but not cover.
