The college football season is past the midway point. Let’s preview the upcoming Tennessee vs Kentucky game. The Volunteers and Wildcats have fallen out of CFP contention, but will still fight to climb the SEC.

Preview
Tennessee jumped out to a 13-0 lead against Alabama in the 1st quarter, making it seem as though they would get a huge win on the road. Unfortunately, they were outscored 34-7 after the 1st, ultimately losing the game 34-20. The Volunteers remain ranked in the Top-25, but their lack of a ranked win puts them at risk of dropping out when the first CFP rankings release next week. A win here could quiet those concerns.
Kentucky has now lost two in a row, after starting the season 5-0. In those first five games, the Wildcats allowed no more than 28 points, averaging just 15 points allowed. In their two losses since then, they’ve been outscored 89-34. Kentucky’s offense took a minor step back in tougher matchups, but it was their defense that really regressed. They need to bounce back quickly with a very tough schedule upcoming.
Prediction
Both of these teams will have a legit claim to be in the first CFP rankings if they can win this game and improve to 6-2. On the other hand, the loser will almost certainly not be ranked. Neither team is likely to catch Georgia in the SEC East, so they’re playing mostly for ranking and a better bowl game now. I see these two teams matching up pretty evenly, but I’d favor Kentucky to win it with home-field advantage.
