Preview

USC improved to 4-0 last week, but once again posted a relatively underwhelming performance. Pac-12 after dark road games are notoriously difficult and unpredictable, but the Trojans still could have done better to make a claim as a CFP contender. While their offense hasn’t slowed a bit, their defense continues to look vulnerable. The AP voters seemed to notice, dropping USC from #5 to #8, despite their victory.

Colorado got a massive wake up call last week, getting blown out by Oregon, 42-6. They certainly missed the presence of two-way star Travis Hunter, but the Buffaloes likely wouldn’t have come close regardless. They looked a lot more like the 1-win team of last season in the loss, though the team as a whole is still much better. Colorado will face another tough task against USC here, aiming to return to the conversation.

Prediction

Colorado’s performance last week showed just how difficult it is to go from 1-11 to CFP contender in one season. Aiming for bowl eligibility may have been a more realistic goal for the Buffaloes. That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if they play better this week against USC’s subpar defense. I don’t love the Trojans’ chances of covering a 22-point spread on the road in a 10 am kickoff. I’ll take USC to win it, but not cover.
