Utah had little trouble against Cal last week, winning 34-14. They now sit at 5-1 on the season, with their one loss coming on the road against #12 Oregon State. Upcoming games against #18 USC, #9 Oregon, and #5 Washington provide the Utes with plenty of chances to build their CFP rรฉsumรฉ. On the other hand, one more loss would likely eliminate them from CFP contention. Utah will continue to rely on their defense.
USC took their first loss of the season against Notre Dame. They were struggling on defense for multiple weeks in a row, but surviving thanks to their offense. Unfortunately, the Trojans finally faced an opponent with a top-tier defense and offense, and they did not fare well. After losing 48-20 to Notre Dame, USC is in desperate need of a bounce back win this week against Utah, with Washington and Oregon also looming.
Prediction
This will be a very interesting game between two solid Pac-12 teams. USC remains at the top of the Pac-12 standings since their loss to Notre Dame was non-conference. That allows them to control their own destiny. At the same time, a second loss would be detrimental to their CFP hopes, as it would be to Utah’s. The Trojans defense may finally get a bit of a break here. I see USC winning it at home, but not covering.
