Preview
West Virginia missed a bowl game for just the 2nd time in the past 10 seasons last year, matching 2019 for the worst record in that span. While 5-7 isn’t terrible, the Mountaineers will certainly be aiming to return to a bowl game this season. With an increase in teams in the Big-12 comes an increase in competition, giving them a need to prove themselves. They’ll likely be right on the cusp of 6 wins and a bowl game in 2023.
Penn State had another very solid season last year, blowing past Utah in the Rose Bowl, and finishing at 11-2 on the season. Despite that success, the Nittany Lions still have their eyes on something bigger, the CFP. They’ll need to avoid going 0-2 against Michigan and Ohio State again to have a chance. If they can snag a spot in the Big-10 title game, they’ll have a legitimate chance to make it. QB Drew Allar will be key.
Prediction
Penn State and West Virginia are finally resuming their rivalry that had spanned for five decades before it ended over 30 years ago. For their first clash since 1992, Penn State will have the home field advantage. West Virginia should still be able to get on the board, but I doubt they will win this game. The Nittany Lions are a wholly better team, and ultimately should earn the victory. I’d take them to cover the spread as well.
