  • Cincinnati lost in the AFC Championship game last year, after going 12-4.
  • The Browns had another subpar season, finishing at just 7-10 on the year.
  • These two teams last met on December 11, in a game the Bengals won 23-10.

The NFL season kicks off next week. Let’s preview the upcoming Bengals vs Browns AFC North clash. Cincinnati will aim for another deep playoff run, while Cleveland needs to avoid another disappointment.

Preview

The Bengals have made the AFC Championship or better in two straight seasons, thriving under QB Joe Burrow. Unfortunately, Burrow and Cincinnati are still looking for one of those strong finishes to end in a championship. They’ll have a great shot of doing so this season, with most of their key pieces returning. If the offensive line continues to improve, and the defense doesn’t regress, Cincinnati will be tough to beat.

Cleveland had another disappointing finish last season, going just 7-10. To a certain extent, it was always expected to be a lost season for the Browns, after QB Deshaun Watson was suspended for 11 games. That being said, a roster with as much bought talent as theirs should still be better than 7-10, and Watson did not look good when he returned. He’ll shake off some of the rust, but the Browns are still a question mark.

Prediction

Many analysts have the Browns pegged to return to being a playoff-caliber team in 2023, with Watson available for the whole year. Frankly, I disagree with that belief. While I believe Cleveland will take a step forward this season, I doubt they will make the playoffs. This opening week matchup against Cincinnati could be a wake up call for the Browns if they can’t keep it close at home. I’ll take the Bengals to win by 10.
