  • Arizona went just 4-13 last season, and is expected to do poorly again in 2023.
  • The Commanders posted an 8-8-1 record, but finished last in a tough NFC East.
  • These two teams last met on September 20, 2020, in a game the Cardinals won 30-15.

The NFL season kicks off next week. Let’s preview the upcoming Cardinals vs Commanders matchup. Arizona is expected to tank this season, so Washington will be aiming to start their year with an easy win.

Preview

The Cardinals finished near the bottom of the league last season, and are expected to be even worse this year. With QB Kyler Murray still rehabbing from injury, Arizona is expected to start Josh Dobbs at QB. On top of that, DeAndre Hopkins departed, J.J. Watt retired, and James Conner entered his age-28 season. It’s widely expected that Arizona will tank this year, with their eyes on superstar prospect Caleb Williams.

Washington finished at 8-8-1 last season, which is much better than their projection this year. It’s a bit of an interesting expected decline, considering the Commanders should only improve as DE Chase Young returns from injury. While the defense should be solid, QB Sam Howell’s performance will play a major role in their success. With Terry McLaurin banged up, 2nd-year WR Jahan Dotson could emerge as a top WR.

Prediction

It’s hard to imagine this Cardinals team winning many games this season. While they do still have some assets on offense, the roster as a whole is very depleted. Starting the year on the road against a tough Washington defense is a tall task for Arizona. I wouldn’t expect a 30-point blowout here, but I’d be surprised if the Cardinals get past 14 points. This should be a pretty easy win and cover for Washington.
