Preview
The Eagles were the best team in the NFC last season, and nearly the best in the NFL. Their defense was outstanding, but a few key pieces departed over the offseason. Even so, Philadelphia replaced them well by bringing in both veterans and rookies. On offense, Jalen Hurts will once again have Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown to throw to, though RB Miles Sanders departed for Carolina. The Eagles will be solid again.
New England has now missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, an almost unheard of result under Bill Belichick. QB Mac Jones regressed quite a bit last year, and was briefly pressed by Bailey Zappe. The Patriots are committed to Jones moving forward, and are hoping he can bounce back without the same nagging injuries. New England will need their defense to remain elite to compete in a tough division.
Prediction
New England’s stellar defense each season coupled with their home-field advantage in this game gives them the a shot at surprising the Eagles. The losing team usually doesn’t have a Super Bowl hangover, but Week 1 games are notoriously unpredictable, so I wouldn’t count the Patriots out. That being said, the Eagles certainly have the more complete roster, and should be able to win this game without much issue.
