  • New York surged back from down 28-7, defeating the Cardinals 31-28.
  • The 49ers looked impressive once again, winning 30-23 over the Rams.
  • These two teams last met on September 27, 2020, in a game the 49ers won 36-9.

The NFL season is now in full swing! Let’s preview the upcoming Giants vs 49ers matchup. San Francisco will be aiming to start out 3-0, while New York is hoping to build on the momentum of their comeback win.

Preview

The Giants exited their 40-0 loss against Dallas in desperate need of a win against the tanking Cardinals. Unfortunately, they quickly fell behind 28-7. With their season in danger, the Giants had no choice but to put everything on the line in the 2nd half, successfully coming back to win 31-28. That being said, they also lost Saquon Barkley to an injury and are already without Andrew Thomas. This game could be ugly.

San Francisco improved to 2-0 with a road win against the Rams on Sunday. QB Brock Purdy was efficient again, but it was the run game that really provided the juice for the offense. Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey combined for 154 yards on 25 carries, averaging over 6 yards per carry. Meanwhile, the 49ers defense started slow but settled in as the game progressed, giving up just 6 total points in the 2nd half.

Prediction

There’s a part of me that wants to believe that the Giants can carry the momentum of their comeback win into a competitive result on Thursday. If Saquon Barkley and Andrew Thomas were healthy, maybe that could be the case. Without them, the Giants offense will likely be overwhelmed by the 49ers defense. Daniel Jones is also historically below average in prime time games. I’d take the 49ers to win and cover.
