  • Detroit has high hopes for this season, after narrowly missing the playoffs in 2022.
  • The Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champs, and will attempt the rare repeat.
  • These two teams last met on September 29, 2019, in a game the Chiefs won 34-30.

The NFL season kicks off next week. Let’s preview the upcoming Lions vs Chiefs season opener. Both teams are projected to win their divisions and make the playoffs, but the Lions are the underdog here.

Preview

The Lions went 9-8 last season, but missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker with Seattle. They are expected to take another step forward this season. With Aaron Rodgers leaving the Packers, and Minnesota having major concerns on defense, Detroit has emerged as the favorite to win their division. They’ll need their defense to take another step forward, and QB Jared Goff to finish in the top-10 in QBR once again in 2023.

Kansas City continues to be elite, having now won two of the last four Super Bowls, and participated in three of them. It’s become difficult to imagine anyone else winning the AFC, with Mahomes entering a Brady-like level of domination. That being said, the AFC is stacked with talent, and no team has won back-to-back Super Bowls since Brady did it nearly 20 years ago. A depleted WR corps may also have an effect.

Prediction

Lions fans are very hopeful for this season, and with good reason. Unfortunately, they drew the most brutal Week 1 matchup possible, a road game against the defending champions. That being said, if Detroit is able to win this game, they will enter Week 2 with tremendous momentum. Teams change a lot each year so an upset isn’t impossible, but I’m ultimately going to take Mahomes and the Chiefs to win at home.
