Al Hazem is sitting at the bottom of the SPL table with a 2-6-9 record in the 2023-24 season. This team is one of only a couple that did not sign big players from European soccer leagues in the last transfer window. In fact, most of Al Hazem’s players are local Saudi players.
It’s just the opposite when it comes to Al Ahli, which has a roster that’s packed with global superstars that used to play for some of the biggest soccer clubs in Europe – Edouard Mendy (came from Chelsea), Merih Demiral (Atalanta), Franck Kessie (Barcelona), Roberto Firmino (Liverpool), Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City), and Allan Saint-Maximin (Newcastle).
With these players on the team, it’s no surprise that Al Ahli is doing well. These guys are sitting in the No. 3 position in the SPL standings, which is just three fewer than Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr. To be fair, CR7 & Co. have played a game fewer than most other teams but leapfrogging them does remain a possibility for Al Ahli. They could do it before the end of the year.
