2024 MLS: Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers Prediction, Preview, and Odds (October 23)
- Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers is the Wild Card game of the Western Conference.
- Neither team should be proud of their recent form in the 2024 MLS.
- The Timbers look like a (slightly) better team than the Whitecaps.
Both teams have been in disappointing form lately, each being without a since win since mid-September. They should feel lucky for getting to the Wild Card Round of the 2024 MLS Playoffs – this happened because their rivals for postseason spots did badly as well in the closing stages of the regular season.
So, the big question is which team will up their game on Wednesday – Vancouver Whitecaps or Portland Timbers?

Game Preview
The Vancouver Whitecaps lost their last four games, scoring just two goals in that period. Obviously, it’s their offense that’s been struggling the most, which is kind of surprising given that all of their key attackers have been 100% fit.
It’s a similar story when it comes to Portland. Even though they did great in the offense in the first part of the regular season, they struggled to score in the last couple of games.
In fact, they scored just one goal in their last three games, which is a very low number especially given that their season average is just under two goals.
In their most recent game, they drew 1:1 with the Seattle Sounders. Not bad you might think, but their opponent had just 10 men on the field for more than 20 minutes. The Timbers’ midfield didn’t do much to create chances, which is why they failed to take advantage of having one player more in the game.
Portland Timbers vs. Vancouver Whitecaps Prediction
The Portland Timbers are better than the Vancouver Whitecaps, especially when it comes to the offense, even though they haven’t been scoring much lately. Their defense isn’t great, but that shouldn’t worry them much as their opponents have been horrible in the final third.

As a result, we probably won’t see too many goals, but a 1:0 or 2:0 win for Portland looks like a very plausible scenario.
