Match Preview
The pressure will be mounting on Atletico Madrid ahead of this second leg, as the Champions League is the club’s only chance of winning a major trophy this term. Atletico suffered a humbling 3-0 loss in the Copa del Rey last week, and they come into this second leg after winning just once across their last four in all competitions.
Inter did just about enough to edge the first leg, with their winning effort being netted with ten minutes remaining by Marko Arnautovic. The striker missed a number of straightforward openings before scoring the first goal. However, the Italian side will take huge confidence from their defensive structure in that first meeting with Atletico, as they stopped the Spanish visitors from recording a single shot on target.

Inter’s record in the Champions League across the last two seasons has been very strong. They have recorded victories in seven of their last nine home matches, which is as many victories as they had recorded in their previous 21. Meanwhile, their victory in the first leg saw them become the first Serie A side to claim victories in all nine of their opening games to start a calendar year.
Atletico will have home field advantage to turn the tide back in their favor, but their chances are certainly negatively impacted based on the fact that they have lost each of their last two fixtures against Italian opposition in the knockout round of the Champions League.
