Match Preview

Arsenal will be looking to continue their excellent start to 2024 when they return to Champions League action in the round of 16 stage. The Gunners have recorded three straight victories in home matches against Porto, but they are without a victory in three on the road. In fact, Arsenal last managed to make it through the round of 16 stage when overcoming Porto in 2009-10.

Arsenal have a poor record in the knockout stages of the Champions League, as they have been eliminated in the round of 16 on more occasions than any other side since 2003-04. They will also be looking to end a seven-year run of falling at this stage of the Champions League.

FC Porto have been consistent enough in home matches in the Champions League, but they have a poor record against English opposition. The Portuguese side has fallen against English sides in seven of their last eight knockout ties. Their only victory was recorded against Man United on their way to winning the European Cup under Jose Mourinho in 2003-04.

An interesting trend is the fact that the side to have eliminated Porto in each of the last five seasons have gone on to reach the final. The Portuguese side have fallen at this stage of the competition on the second-highest number of occasions behind Arsenal, but they have won two of their last three home matches against the Gunners.

Porto vs Arsenal Prediction

Arsenal don’t have the best record in this fixture, but it could be hard to overlook the Gunners based on their performances at the start of the calendar year. Therefore, the preference is for the Gunners.
