Game Preview
For the third straight season, Chelsea and Real Madrid will lock horns in the knockout stage of the Champions League. The Spanish giants claimed a dramatic success in this tie last year, but they were beaten 3-2 in their home leg. Both sides come into the showdown with little to play for in their domestic leagues, with Real trailing Barcelona by over ten points in La Liga.
Real has an excellent recent record against English opposition in the knockout stage, as they have progressed from nine previous ties. That includes victories in each of the previous three, with the most recent coming against Liverpool in the previous round. Meanwhile, they also boast an excellent home scoring record, as they have scored in their previous 30 at the Bernabeu.

Chelsea’s form this term domestically has been very poor, as they face a fight to finish in the top half of the Premier League standings. However, the Blues do have an excellent recent record in Europe against Spanish teams. They have lost just once in their previous nine away games in the knockout stage of the Champions League against sides from La Liga, which includes a run of three without loss.
Chelsea is also one of the few sides in Europe to boast an excellent record against Real. They have lost just one of their previous seven against the La Liga giants, and the Premier League club boasts the smallest loss rate against Real of the teams that have played against them on five or more occasions.
Prediction
Chelsea’s record against Spanish opposition is incredibly interesting coming into this showdown. However, it’s hard to have much faith in Frank Lampard’s side based on their previous outings. Therefore, we could see Real Madrid getting the home win, with Karim Benzema getting himself on the scoresheet.
