Match Preview
This quarterfinal has a very open feel to it, with both Qatar and Panama holding excellent chances of reaching the last four. Qatar should come into the quarterfinal in excellent confidence, as they secured a shock win over Mexico to finish second in the Group B standings. The victory ensured that they finished ahead of Honduras on goal difference.
Hazem Shehata scored the crucial goal in that success in Santa Clara, which was aided by the fact that Haiti was beaten by Honduras. Qatar’s chances of progression looked slim going into the final round of matches after they were beaten by Haiti in their opening match, and held to a draw by Honduras in their second outing.

Panama may be challenging to overlook in this quarterfinal showdown, as they topped a very competitive Group C in the opening stage. They picked up seven points from their matches in the group stage, having won twice and drawn once. Their only dropped points came in their final group match against El Salvador in Houston.
However, their place in the next round was already assured before that victory after they recorded 2-1 wins against both Costa Rica and Martinique. Jose Fajardo could be their main star to watch this weekend, as he has scored twice in three matches at the Gold Cup this year.
Panama vs Qatar Prediction
These two nations previously met in the last edition of the Gold Cup, as the teams played out an entertaining 3-3 draw. We expect a far cagier affair this weekend with high stakes on the line. But, the preference is for Qatar to get the result and progress through to the final four.
