Match Preview

The Netherlands are still far from assured of a place at the EUROs next summer, as they must claim victories in each of their remaining two matches to seal second spot in the Group B standings. They will be looking to get off to the perfect start this weekend, as they welcome Ireland to Amsterdam.

The Dutch likely require one win to secure a spot, as they were excellent 1-0 winners over Greece in their most recent match. However, they were forced to be very patient in that fixture, with the winning goal being scored by Virgil van Dijk in the third minute of injury time.

Ireland are already mathematically out of the race to finish in the top two positions in the group, as they have picked up just two wins from their seven qualifying matches. However, the Irish will be looking to build momentum ahead of a crucial playoff in early 2024.

Ireland will at least take confidence from the fact that they ended a three-game losing run in their previous international. However, this is a clear step up in opposition following their 4-0 success over Gibraltar. Evan Ferguson was among the scorers in that win, and the young striker will be key to Ireland’s chances of reaching the EUROs over the next six months.

Netherlands vs Ireland Prediction

Ireland have the quality to make this a testing assignment for the Netherlands on Saturday. However, we struggle to overlook the Dutch, and we expect them to eventually grind out a 2-0 success in Amsterdam.
