It has been a contrasting start to the domestic seasons for these two sides, meaning that there will be extra weight on this first ever competitive meeting between the teams on Thursday. Bilbao will be the tenth Spanish side that Roma have come up against in Europe, but the Italian side have won just once of their last eight matches against Spanish rivals making their European debut.
Athletic Club will be coming up against Italian opposition for the first time since the 2015-16 season. On that occasion, they managed to record a 3-2 win over Sassuolo in the group stage. But, Bilbao have won just once in nine visits to Italy across all European competitions.
